The Chicago Blackhawks officially declared that forward Connor Bedard wouldn’t resume play during tonight’s match against the New Jersey Devils due to an injury sustained from a collision with Devils defenseman Brendan Smith.
During a late first-period incident, Bedard attempted to navigate between Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier when Smith collided with him. Despite quickly getting back on his feet, Bedard, visibly affected, made his way to the bench, clutching his mouth. Bedard’s time on the ice amounted to 3 minutes and 5 seconds.
Bedard, a product of North Vancouver, has been a standout performer for the team, leading with 15 goals, 18 assists, and a total of 33 points across 39 games. His exceptional performance places him at the forefront among rookies, leading in goals, assists, and overall points, establishing himself as a strong contender for the coveted Calder Trophy. The impact of his absence on the Blackhawks is evident, with Philipp Kurashev trailing behind with 22 points in 31 games.
Recently, Bedard made history as the youngest-ever All-Star, earning a spot in the 2024 NHL All-Star Game scheduled in Toronto.
As the first overall pick by the Blackhawks in the 2023 NHL Draft, Bedard’s remarkable achievements in the WHL with the Regina Pats further underline his prowess. His astounding performance included 71 goals and 72 assists, totaling an impressive 143 points in 51 regular-season games. Additionally, Bedard contributed ten goals and ten assists, totaling 20 points in 7 playoff games, becoming the first Canadian Hockey League player to secure the CHL Top Prospect, Top Player, and Top Scorer trophies.
Positioned at eighth in the Central Division, with an 11-25-2 record and 24 points across 38 games, the Chicago Blackhawks will face the Calgary Flames on Sunday. Updates regarding Bedard’s condition are anticipated from either Head Coach Luke Richardson or General Manager Kyle Davidson at the earliest opportunity.
